How Can My Diet Help My Smile?

Everyone knows that excellent oral hygiene is the first step that you need to take to ensure a beautiful smile. An excellent oral hygiene routine can consist of brushing, flossing, using mouthwash, and regular visits to our office. Most patients do not realize that they can add an extra layer to keeping their oral hygiene at the next level: adding some items to your diet. We have listed some food options that you can add to your diet that will help improve your oral hygiene.

  • Tea
    • Black & Green teas have compounds in them that are called polyphenols which are known to slow the growth of bacteria. Black and green teas can also help suppress any bad breath if you are suffering from halitosis.
  •  Antioxidants
    • Antioxidants are more than awesome for your body and your mouth, as they will combat bacteria that cause inflammation. They will also help protect your gums from any type of bacteria that can cause periodontal disease.
  • Vitamin D
    • Vitamin D is imperative for your overall health and to build strong teeth. As it will allow your body to absorb and consumer more calcium. Try adding milk, and fish to your diet such as whole milk, flounder or cod to your diet.
  • Vitamin C
    • Another instance where you can improve your overall health and oral health is with vitamin C. Vitamin C does wonders for your immune system helping your body by producing more collagen. Collagen is the main protein that is used by your body to fight infections including periodontal disease. Try adding foods like kale, broccoli, red or green peppers, orange juice. Also, if you are not a fan of these foods, it will not hurt to take a vitamin C supplement in the morning before you start your day.
  • Lean Meats
    • Lean cuts of meat such as chicken, beef, and fish are excellent sources of protein for your body. These same proteins are also excellent for providing your teeth with the protein they need to grow stronger and stay healthy longer inside your mouth. Just like protein does for your body helping your bones and muscles grow strong, they also assist your teeth in a similar way.
