What Is Invisalign & How Does It Work?

Invisalign works by using a series of retainer-like aligners to gradually move the teeth into the optimal position. In your initial appointment, Dr. Welinksy will take digital impressions of your teeth and using CAD/CAM technology, he will create a treatment plan to improve the health and appearance of your smile.

Your unique series of clear aligners will gradually push your teeth into the desired position. Like traditional braces, this happens very slowly. Your retainers will be molded not to fit the current position of your teeth, but to fit your teeth after their first stage of movement. Because the grooves of the aligner will push against your teeth, they will gradually begin to move, until they fit perfectly into the aligner. Most patients will change their aligners every two weeks.

Benefits of Invisalign

·         Invisible

o   When you are wearing Invisalign, the majority of people that you encounter on a daily basis will not even know that you are currently going through treatment.

·         Removable & Easy To Clean

o   Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign are removable. This means that it is easy to continue brushing and flossing your teeth as you normally would do on a daily basis.

·         Eat Anything You Want

o   Since Invisalign aligners are easily removed, you can enjoy your favorite foods and not have to worry about food getting stuck in your traditional metal braces.

·         Straight Teeth

o   Invisalign can treat mild to moderate orthodontic concerns, including crooked or protruding teeth, overbite or underbite

Invisalign What to Expect

Initial Consult

We will take x-rays, pictures, and impressions of your teeth, which will then be used to create a digital 3-D image. From these images, we will use CAD/CAM technology to map out a precise treatment plan, including the exact movements of your teeth, and tell you the approximate length of treatment.

Beginning Treatment

Based on your treatment plan, a series of custom-made, clear aligners is then created specifically for you. These aligners are made of a smooth, comfortable plastic that won’t irritate your cheeks and gums like traditional metal braces often do. Simply wear them throughout the day, and remove them when you eat or to brush and floss your teeth. As you wear each set of aligners, your teeth gently and gradually begin to shift into place. And because they’re virtually invisible, most people won’t even notice you’re wearing them.

Routine Checkups

Approximately every two weeks, you will begin wearing a new set of aligners, advancing you to the next stage of your treatment. To monitor your progress, you will also have occasional checkups with your doctor, usually only every six weeks or so. For best results and a timely outcome, you should wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day, throughout your entire treatment.

Maintaining Results

Once your treatment is complete, protect the beautiful new smile you have invested in. It is recommended that all patients wear a retainer after treatment to keep their teeth in place and maintain the appearance and function of their new smile.

Invisalign FAQs

Does Invisalign Hurt?

There are a few minor sources of pain when it comes to Invisalign. These are, first, the soreness that comes from the aligners pressing against the teeth, and second, the pain that comes with having the aligners in your mouth.
