Dental Implants vs. Bridges: Which Is Right for You?

You’ve lost a tooth. Maybe it happened in an accident. Maybe it’s been loose for a while. Or maybe you’ve been living with a gap for years and finally decided to do something about it. Now you’re staring at two options: dental implants or a dental bridge.

Both can give you back a complete smile. Both can help you eat and speak with confidence. But they work very differently. And one might be a better fit for your situation. At Sweet Tooth Dentistry, we help Towson patients weigh these choices every single week. Here’s what you need to know.

Dental Implants vs. Bridges: Which Is Right for You? in Towson, MD

What Is a Dental Implant?

Think of an implant as a replacement for the whole tooth, root and all. A small titanium post goes into your jawbone. Over a few months, that post fuses with the bone. It becomes part of you. Then we attach a custom-made crown on top. The result is often a tooth that looks, feels, and functions just like your natural ones.

An implant doesn’t just fill a gap. It actually stimulates your jawbone, which keeps it from shrinking over time. That’s something no other option can do.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A bridge does exactly what it sounds like. It bridges the gap.

The false tooth, or teeth, sits in the middle and gets held in place by crowns on the healthy teeth next to the gap. Those neighboring teeth get shaved down slightly to support the bridge. You don’t need surgery. You don’t need to wait months for healing. In just a couple of visits, your gap disappears.

A bridge is a tried-and-true solution. It’s been helping people for generations. And when done well, it can look completely natural.

The Trade-Offs You Should Know

Dental implants are built to last. With good care, they can easily go twenty years or more, often a lifetime. They also preserve your jawbone and don’t require any changes to your neighboring teeth. Cleaning them is as simple as brushing and flossing normally. The downsides? You’re looking at surgery, a recovery period of several months, and a higher upfront cost. You also need enough bone in your jaw to support the post.

Bridges move faster. You can have a complete smile in about two to three weeks with no surgery involved. The cost is lower upfront as well. But bridges only last about ten to fifteen years on average. They require shaving down healthy teeth, and they don’t do anything to prevent the bone loss that happens when a tooth goes missing. Cleaning underneath a bridge takes a little more effort, too.

Which Path Makes Sense for You?

If you’re in good overall health, have enough jawbone, and want a permanent, long-term solution, an implant is probably your best bet. The longer timeline and higher cost are worth it for many patients who never want to worry about that tooth again.

On the other hand, if you’d prefer a faster, less invasive fix, or if your jawbone isn’t strong enough for an implant, a bridge might be the better choice. It’s also a great option if you’re looking for something more budget-friendly right now.

There’s also a hybrid option we offer. If you’re missing several teeth in a row, we can place two or three implants and attach a bridge between them. That gives you the stability of implants without placing one for every single missing tooth. We handle everything right here in our Towson office.

Don’t Wait Too Long

When you lose a tooth, the bone underneath starts to shrink. The longer you wait, the more bone you lose. And that can make implants harder down the road. That’s why we always recommend addressing missing teeth sooner rather than later.
