Porcelain Veneers: A Before & After Look at Smile Makeovers

You’ve seen them on TV. You’ve probably scrolled past them on social media. But have you ever wondered if porcelain veneers are actually right for you? Not everyone needs braces for two years. Not everyone wants a mouthful of metal. And sometimes, whitening treatments just don’t cut it.

At Sweet Tooth Dentistry, we’ve helped countless Towson neighbors transform their smiles with porcelain veneers. Here’s what you need to know before you decide.

Porcelain Veneers: A Before & After Look in Towson, MD

What Are Porcelain Veneers, Exactly?

Think of veneers like thin, custom-made shells. They fit right over the front of your teeth. Once they’re on, nobody can tell they aren’t your natural teeth.

Each veneer is handcrafted to match the shape, size, and color of the teeth around it. That’s why they look so natural. No fake, chicklet-looking smiles here.

Dr. Welinsky, a Baltimore native who grew up right in the area, puts it this way: “Veneers aren’t about making every tooth look exactly the same. They’re about making your smile look like the best version of your smile.”

Who Gets Veneers?

You might be a good candidate for veneers if you have:

  • Stains that won’t budge: Some teeth don’t respond to whitening. Tetracycline stains, heavy fluorosis, or deep discoloration from trauma often need more than bleach.
  • Small chips: A little nick on a front tooth can drive you crazy. Veneers cover it right up.
  • Gaps between teeth: If you’ve got a small gap you’ve always hated, veneers could close it without braces.
  • Slightly crooked or uneven teeth: Veneers won’t fix major alignment issues. But they can help make mildly crooked teeth look perfectly straight.
  • Worn-down edges: Some people grind their teeth without even knowing it. Over time, the edges get flat and uneven. Veneers could restore that natural shape.

What’s the Process Like?

We won’t pretend it’s a single visit. Getting veneers takes a few appointments. But the results are worth it.

First visit: You and Dr. Shires talk about what you want to change. He’ll look at your bite, your gum health, and your existing teeth. Not everyone is a good candidate right away.

Second visit: We gently remove a tiny bit of enamel from the front of your teeth. Don’t worry, it’s less than the thickness of a fingernail. Then we take molds and send them to the lab. You’ll leave with temporary veneers that look pretty close to the final product.

Third visit: About two weeks later, your permanent veneers arrive. We check the fit, the color, and how they feel when you bite. Once everything’s perfect, we bond them on permanently.

Dr. Shires, who’s been voted a “Top Dentist” by Baltimore Magazine multiple years in a row, always tells patients: “Don’t rush this process. Good veneers take time. Great veneers take a little more.”

Do Veneers Last Forever?

No, and we won’t tell you they do. With good care, porcelain veneers last 10 to 15 years. Some people get 20 years out of theirs. But they aren’t invincible.

You can’t bite into hard candy or ice. You shouldn’t use your teeth as tools (no opening packages). And if you grind your teeth at night, you’ll probably need a nightguard to protect them. But regular brushing, flossing, and checkups? That’s all they need.
